Payment methods your customers can use
The payment methods your customers see come from your payment gateway. You select them on each gateway account under Settings → Payment gateways. For the full list of each gateway, see Select a gateway.
Customers use a payment method in two ways:
| Action | What happens |
|---|---|
| Save a payment method | At checkout or in the portal. Renewals charge it automatically. |
| Pay now | The customer pays one invoice in the portal. Some methods are only for this. |
Cards and 3D Secure
The customer types the card into the gateway's own card form. Card details never reach your servers or Two Minute Billing.
When the bank asks for 3D Secure, the customer confirms the card with the bank in that form:
- Stripe, Adyen and Checkout.com: the card form asks for 3D Secure when the bank needs it, when the customer saves a card and when they pay now.
- Braintree: only when 3D Secure is on in your Braintree account. See the Braintree guide.
Renewals charge the saved card without the customer. If the bank still declines a renewal because it wants the customer's approval, the payment fails and your failed-payment settings apply. With Smart decline handling, the invoice pauses and the customer is asked to update their payment method. See Recover failed payments.
Apple Pay and Google Pay
These gateways show Apple Pay or Google Pay when a customer pays an invoice now:
- Stripe: Apple Pay and Google Pay.
- Square: Google Pay and Cash App Pay.
- Checkout.com: Google Pay.
- Adyen: Apple Pay and Google Pay. Apple Pay opens a payment page on Adyen.
- Mollie: Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Coming soon: Apple Pay on Square and Apple Pay on Checkout.com.
PayPal, Razorpay, Braintree, Authorize.net, GoCardless, Cashfree and PayU show no wallets on pay now.
On Adyen, Checkout.com and Square, wallets are for pay now only. They are not saved for renewals: when a customer saves a payment method there, the form shows cards only. To pay renewals automatically, the customer saves a card.
Apple Pay on Adyen opens Adyen's own payment page. The customer selects Apple Pay, pays on Adyen's page, and comes back to the portal. Your domain does not need Apple Pay verification. The option shows only in a browser that can pay with Apple Pay (Safari with a card in Apple Wallet). See the Adyen guide.
On Stripe, register your storefront domain. Open the Stripe account under Settings → Payment gateways and select Register & check. Stripe then shows Apple Pay and Google Pay on that domain, if they are on in your Stripe account.
On Mollie, Apple Pay and Google Pay are part of Cards. A customer who sets up payments with one of them saves a card mandate, and renewals charge it.
Bank debits
A bank debit stays pending for some days, until the bank collects the money. While it is pending, the transaction shows This payment is still processing, and Two Minute Billing checks with the gateway on a schedule. To ask the gateway at once, select the Check now button, which names your gateway (for example, Check Stripe now).
| Gateway | Bank debits | Cancel a pending debit |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe | Direct Debit (ACH), Direct Debit (SEPA) | Yes |
| Razorpay | Netbanking (eMandate) | No |
| Square | ACH (pay now) | No |
| Mollie | Direct Debit (SEPA) | Yes |
| Authorize.net | eCheck (ACH) | Yes |
| GoCardless | Direct Debit (Bacs), Direct Debit (SEPA), Direct Debit (ACH), Direct Debit (BECS), Direct Debit (BECS NZ), Pre-authorized debit (PAD), Direct Debit (Autogiro), Direct Debit (Betalingsservice), PayTo | Yes |
| Cashfree | eNACH | Yes |
Cancel a pending debit
On the gateways marked Yes, open the pending transaction and select Cancel debit. Two Minute Billing asks the gateway to stop the debit before the bank collects it:
- If the gateway cancels it, no money moves, and automatic collection stops on that invoice. Then you can collect the invoice again, record a payment or void it.
- If the gateway cannot cancel it, nothing changes.
You cannot undo a cancel.
When the bank returns a debit
A bank can return a debit after it was marked paid. Two Minute Billing then marks the payment failed and the invoice is due again: it goes back to Payment due and into your retry queue. An invoice with automatic collection off goes to Not paid.
Mandates and authorizations
A mandate is the customer's permission to debit their account for each renewal. The customer gives it once, when they save the payment method.
ACH debit authorization
A US bank debit (ACH) needs the customer's written authorization:
- Two Minute Billing shows the authorization: Authorize.net.
- The gateway's own form shows it: Stripe, Square and GoCardless.
Where Two Minute Billing shows it, the customer reads the Bank account debit authorization and selects the checkbox to agree before they save the bank account. The authorization says that:
- The business debits the amount due on each invoice, on or after the invoice date.
- If a debit is different from the last debit, the customer gets a notice of the amount and the date at least 10 days before it.
- The customer can cancel by telling the business, or by removing the bank account in the billing portal, at least 3 business days before the next debit.
Two Minute Billing keeps the text that the customer accepted with the payment method. Then it emails the customer a copy: the Bank debit authorization copy email. If you disable this email, send the customer a copy yourself.
Pre-debit notices in India
Rules in India (NPCI and RBI) require a notice to the customer at least 24 hours before each mandate debit, with the amount, the date and the mandate reference:
- Razorpay (UPI Autopay, netbanking eMandate and card mandates): Two Minute Billing sends the Pre-debit notification email from about two days before each debit. If you disable this email, you must send the notice yourself.
- Cashfree, UPI Autopay: Two Minute Billing sends the notice through Cashfree about 25 hours before the debit, and the customer's bank tells the customer.
- Cashfree, eNACH and cards: Cashfree sends the notice itself.
GoCardless also sends its own advance notice before each Direct Debit, so Two Minute Billing does not send a second one. For PayTo, GoCardless sends no notice, so Two Minute Billing sends the Pre-debit notification email.
