# Businesses

A business is an independent book inside your organization: its own catalogue, its own currencies, its own payment gateways, its own customers. Two businesses share nothing but the account they belong to, which is how one organization sells under several brands or in several countries without their data or their numbering ever mixing.

Each business has a **live mode and a test mode**: two business ids, created together. The test mode (`test_business_id` on the live business) starts as a copy of the live settings and is independent after that; move catalog and settings between them with a configuration transfer. Test keys reach only test mode and live keys only live mode. Test mode is where you rehearse: it can seed sample data, its Time Travel moves a simulated clock forward so you can watch a year of renewals, dunning and expiry in minutes, it sends email only to your team members, and nothing it produces reaches a live webhook endpoint.
