> What happens when a gateway says no.

What happens when a gateway says no. Every decline a provider can return is mapped to a canonical answer: whether it is worth retrying, whether the instrument should be marked unusable, and what the customer should be told.

The built-in mapping is the default, and a business can override it at two levels — one specific gateway rule, or every rule producing one canonical code. Deleting an override restores the built-in answer rather than removing the handling.
