# Payment Intents

> A payment intent is a CONTAINER of attempts at a gateway, for one of two purposes.

A payment intent is a CONTAINER of attempts at a gateway, for one of two purposes. `payment` authorizes a priced charge that is later captured INTO an invoice; `setup` is a ZERO-amount authorization whose product is a vaulted instrument (Stripe `seti_…`) and which moves no money. Each try at the gateway is a `payment_attempt`: a buyer who fails 3DS twice before succeeding leaves three attempts, and none of the earlier ones are overwritten.
