# Entitlements

What a plan actually unlocks, so your product can ask the billing system instead of keeping its own copy of who bought what. A **feature** is a switch, a quota or a meter; attaching one to a product grants it to every subscription of that product.

A subscription's effective entitlements are the plan's grants **overlaid with any overrides set on that subscription**, so a one-off arrangement for a single customer does not need a private plan. `check` answers the runtime question — is this subscription entitled, and to how much.
